Answer
My Department is currently fully committed to delivering a sustainable, inclusive, and high-quality education system that meets the diverse needs of all learners, including those with special educational needs.
Managing authorities and sectoral bodies are actively progressing two strategies Strategic Area Plans (2022-27) for the ‘Planning for Sustainable Provision’ and ‘Planning for Special Education Provision’ to ensure effective planning and provision across Northern Ireland. This is delivered by an Area Planning Framework, which supports strategic and collaborative approaches to school estate planning.
The recommendations from the Independent Review of Education are under careful consideration as part of our broader commitment to improving educational outcomes. While no decision has been made on the specific proposal for an Independent Planning Commission, my Department is focused on ensuring that our planning processes are robust, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all pupils. We will continue to engage with stakeholders to refine our approach and ensure that our education system is sustainable, inclusive and equitable.
