Answer

The Department considered road closures, diversion routes and other road safety measures during the completion of the widening scheme on the Comber Greenway. However, as the Comber Greenway is a traffic free active travel route with limited interaction with motorised vehicles, it was not possible to provide an alternative route of similar nature and no viable road safety measures could be introduced on the parallel main roads that would replicate the Comber Greenway.

In preparation for the construction phase of these works, and conscious of the impact on those who normally use the Greenway, consultation was undertaken with key stakeholders. Works were subsequently programmed during the winter months to minimise disruption to the public, however the department would recommend the use of public transport for essential journeys until the works are completed.
